JUST DON’T DO IT

Writer's picture: Philip BradburyPhilip Bradbury

It’s okay to feel unokay

To feel disappointed, bitter and depressed

To feel like ending things

Life, relationships or friendships

For they’re only feelings

Just don’t do it

It’s alright to feel unalright

To want to kick or slap your neighbour

To feel like abusing things

Body, parents, children and others

For they’re only feelings

Just don’t do it

It’s normal to feel abnormal

That your thoughts and aspirations aren’t right

To want advice from the wrong people

Criminals, politicians, advertisers and scientists

For they’re only thoughts

Just don’t do it

Thoughts rush through our brains, 1,000 a day

Feelings arise all moments we’re awake

Demons whisper in our ears

And stir our hearts to act silly

But they’re only thoughts

Just don’t do it

Best not to make decisions when you’re sad

Or set goals when you’re bitter

Or phone your friend when you’re angry

Or write that letter when you’re awash with grief

For they’re only feelings

Just don’t do it

A sad heart, my friend, is a bad, bad master

And the sun doesn’t stay hidden forever

No matter the clouds, they’re parting soon

So wait and smile and wait and smile

For gladness to come

And then you can act
